Hugely popular Indian restaurant Mowgli Street Food is to open the doors of its latest new home in Beverley in July.
It will be the 18th restaurant established since opening its first in 2014, with the East Yorkshire market town joining Liverpool, Manchester, Brighton, Nottingham, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh as locations chosen by owner Nisha Katona MBE.
Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience, with its menu entirely comprised from Nisha’s family recipes. It is about how Indians eat in the privacy of their home kitchens and at favourite lunchtime street stalls.
It offers home-cooked-style Indian food on a menu described as being ‘a million miles away from the curry stereotype’ with the experience ‘not about the intimate, hushed dining’ but ‘the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices.’
Garness Jones handled the property deal which has brought the business to East Yorkshire, and Director Paul White says he was delighted to have played a part in bringing a ‘national success story’ to the region.
“Attracting Mowgli Street Food to Beverley is a real coup for the town given its rapid growth and success, and the fact that, until now, new restaurant locations have mainly been big cities,” he said.
“It is a real national success story and a business every town and city would like to attract given its ever-growing popularity.
“Beverley provides an ideal location for quality restaurants as it continues to be a popular destination, both night and day, for visitors not only locally within East Yorkshire, but also from further afield due to its mix of history, retail and food and drink.
“We are delighted to have played our part in helping Mowgli continue its impressive growth, but also importantly for our local economy, to have attracted such as successful business, adding a new dining experience to the region.”
Beverley a ‘home from home’ for founder
Mowgli Street Food Founder Nisha, who was awarded an MBE for her services to the food industry in 2019, says Beverley has great significance to her and her family, having often visited when she was younger. She described it as a ‘home from home’.
“We used to have great Indian friends in the Hull area. For a trip out we would shoehorn into our battered cars and drive through Beverley - glassy eyed awe as though it was Beverly Hills,” she said.
“The impression Beverley left on my 10-year-old brain is no less powerful now as I feel really quite humbled taking that very home spun puri and lamb curry to the little northern town that happens to feel “very Mowgli”.
“I’m full of enthusiasm, for every Mowgli we create 30 jobs, aim to raise over £500k per year for charity and sponsor a child in need for every full-time employee. Everything is cooked fresh to my exact spec every morning and every day we know we are only as good as our last curry. We hope diners will love Mowgli's passion for healthy, fresh Indian food.”
