Beer connoisseurs are toasting their new addition to East Yorkshire’s real ale scene after relocating a back garden brewery to an industrial estate in Beverley.
Twisted Angel Brewing is already making a name for its ales in pubs and at festivals across the north of England and Head Brewer Matt Hall is working to develop quality and capacity after opening at Beckside Court.
Garness Jones acted for the landlord, and completed the deal swiftly and smoothly to enable the brewery team to press ahead with fitting out the premises. Charlie Parkinson, Agency Surveyor at Garness Jones, said: “They identified this unit and things moved quite quickly because it was the only suitable property in the area – there is limited stock and high demand. This had been used by a company working in the poultry sector and was only vacant for a couple of months before the brewery came in. “They had to do a fair amount of work to adapt the building for their brewing needs but they now have plenty of space in a good location on the edge of a very busy town.”
Matt worked as a waiter and developed his interest in growing hops and brewing beer with Brass Castle Brewery near Pocklington. That was about four years ago but, with a young family, Matt found the commute too much after Brass Castle moved to Malton. So he set up his own brew kit in the garden of his home at North Newbald.
Twisted Angel began to take shape after Matt renewed his acquaintance with fellow real ale enthusiast Allan Sykes by selling him some brewing equipment. Allan brought in Barry Wilson and the pair became shareholders as thoughts turned to expansion. Matt said: “After looking round and having a lot of discussion we came here. There wasn’t a brewery in Beverley when we moved in although one has since set up. We can do 1,500 pints per brew and we brew three times a week but can increase that to five times.”
Twisted Angel now have eight beers in their portfolio. Outlets include Chequers in Beverley, The George Hotel and The Whalebone in Hull and the Centurion Arms in Brough, scene of a soft-launch event recently. Further afield, Twisted Angel beers can be found in Middlesbrough, Castleford, Scarborough and Whitby. Matt said: “We have been at the Hull beer festival for the last two years, we are going to Hessle beer festival, Beverley and maybe Cottingham and Beertown in Malton. Barry added: “We are working on finding more outlets, we are looking to expand into bottles and cans and we have space outside the building to hold events, which might be something we will look at in the summer.”
